So a recent post included the above image on Instagram, and this was the first sentence, of the caption that went with it:
“Never underestimate the power of the wardrobe staple – great denim!”
MOST ENGAGEMENT AWARD
Now, when I say engagement, this post not only received comments in “the ‘gram”; but also a ton of private direct messages! What did these women want? The answer to this question, “WHERE IS THIS GREAT DENIM??” It made me SO HAPPY to work with everyone!!
NO ONE ANSWER
Jeans are such an important part of the wardrobe. But our body shapes make it very hard to find one that we love on us, as much as we love the look of great denim on a model. The ladies that were asking had one or more of these following obstacles: mommy bulge in the front, no junk in the trunk and back gap. Also, would boyfriend jeans look good on me? What jeans won’t slide off?
HERE’S THE ADVICE I OFFERED
Meaning we’ve given birth, and while most of us knew how to go back to “normal”, there’s a little “extra” sitting quite happily at our abdomen. For women struggling with that, there are two options. A high waisted jean will possibly hold all your “extra” in + prevents “muffin top” and that’s all you need! Otherwise go for a mid rise boyfriend jean, tuck in a tank, and layer with a flowy top and a side tuck. The casual look will draw less attention to your “problem area” when your clothes aren’t worn tight around it.
Brands to consider for this within a budget of $100 or less: Levis, Gap, Old Navy and Not Your Daughters Jeans. This last brand uses a special blend of Lycra and spandex for great support, and available on good ‘ol Amazon.
No Junk In My Trunk
Having a butt is not just great for giving you curves, it’s also super handy for holding up your jeans! When you don’t have a derierre, denim can do the slide, so you are constantly hiking them up!
Brands to consider for enhancing your backside are jeans that have flaps on the back pocket. This one detail adds to the backside to look like there’s more to it, by disguising this “problem area”. I would not recommend back pockets full of glitter, stones, or bold colored stitching. If you ask me that is ASKING for people to look there, and in my humble opinion, that trend has come and gone. Try on brands like Hudson Signature Boot Cut, Levi’s, True Religion & Lucky Brand.
There are two very simple ways to fix this. One…wear a belt. It seems belts became “off trend” a few years back; but ladies I have not gone without a belt on jeans or trousers, for over almost 2 decades. If you’ve not worn one lately, give it a try! They serve a purpose, and accentuate a waistline nicely.
Second way, is get small darts put in by a seamstress. I’ve mentioned this on my instagram many times; but here’s the image to show you what I mean. These will allow for your bottom to fill out the back of the jeans, while cinching in the waist, giving you curves and almost a custom fit! I had it done to these Rock & Republic jeans I bought 10 years ago, and they still look amazing today (but I don’t wear them, since I’m over the swarovski crystal bedazzling, they are just an awesome example to show the little dart that made all the difference)!
Happy Jean Shopping friends!!
