I’m so loving dresses lately! We all need a few pieces that can go day to night if you ask me! You can make a dress do this really well, with different accessories (shoes, jewelry and handbag) and layers (on for the day, off for the night).
DAY TIME MEANS MORE DISCREET
When it comes to daytime wear, I lean towards more modesty / being discreet. Not only do I feel this is an important visual lesson for my 10 year old, VERY observant and style loving daughter. It shows respect for myself and others around me. I like showing a little skin now and then too, just not all at one time, know what I’m sayin’?
With this dress, the neckline is a super deep V. So wearing it with a bandeau top or tank top underneath allows good coverage and you can comfortably go about your day without anything poppin’ out! I had a black one on hand; but I might like it better with a white one…hmmm.
For date night, if I’m feeling racy, I’ll rock the deep V (but likely have some clothing tape to keep it in place!)
FINISHING DETAILS
SHOES
Almost any shoe would work with a dress like this. The side slits are going to allow your skirt to move beautifully when you walk, so a heeled sandal or a flat will be perfect. Because the fabric is light and airy, a bootie or tall boot wouldn’t be my first choice. I think they might be too “heavy” with this.
BELT
No belt necessary as there is a super wide band that gives the illusion of a corset, so that cinched in waist is built in (hello curves!) The ruffles and slight gathering at the waist under the “corset” can also help distract from an area you don’t love, while attention is brought to your tiny waist and V neck.
LAYERS
Layering with a dress like this might be tough since the sleeves have quite a bit of volume, so keep that in mind when dress shopping! I also consider that when I cannot layer with something, that makes it a bit more “memorable”. I realize that it might not get to have as many different looks as other versatile pieces.
ACCESSORIES
Always, my go to tip for necklaces, have it mimic the neckline of your top, so it helps create a long lean line! Pick a finish you love best, and add some fun bracelets, and you are ready to go girl! I also like the idea of filling in the space the neckline leaves, so don’t be afraid to layer some delicates or wear a statement piece.
HAIRSTYLE
Depending on whether you are dressing yourself up or down, a great versatile dress can have you walkin’ tall, even if you are sporting cute sneakers and a messy bun! Go a little more fancy with heels and your favorite “going out” hair!
HANDBAG
This could go any direction. I’ve recently gotten a super cute faux snakeskin crossbody bag. It’s colors and texture would be a really awesome pop to this monochrome outfit. Go fun with it. Maybe one of those cute woven circle bags, or even a teal, robins egg blue, or sunny yellow clutch or tote to finish it off?
Go get yourself a fun Spring / Summer bag to pair with you outfits. It might be all you need to step up your game as we start off a whole new season.
PS – DON’T FORGET TO CHECK….
Like with any dress, just make sure to check that the lighter, flowy material that will be more prevalent as we move through Spring and Summer, isn’t accidentally too sheer. It will almost always look fine indoors; but it never hurts to check how direct sunlight will look, especially if you are going to an event outside!
Send me some pics of you in YOUR Day Dress to Date Night outfit to the Method39 Facebook Page, I’d love to see it!! And you never know who else it might inspire.
