It’s Holiday Time!!! Do you have a party or celebration to attend? If you do, I’ve got some thoughts on GREAT dresses you can wear to these AND other events throughout the year. Who doesn’t love bang for their style buck? That’s why we all love a little black dress, right? so you can switch up the look a little bit just with different shoes and accessories.
I found this Zara Denim Collection dress a whole year ago. I was shopping with my bestie @tluds for an afternoon, and we both love this store. There was no party to shop for. Rarely does an event come along where I need a cocktail type dress to be honest. This probably explains why I get accused of looking “so fancy” every day..I have nowhere else to get fancy for! Haha!
Anywaaaayyyyyysssss, here’s what I love about this dress. For a simple piece of shiny black fabric, there’s actually alot!
Find a Little Black Dress that Fit’s and Flatters
It has been many years since I have bought a super slim fitting outfit. I guess I figure I just don’t need to give it all away at first glance. Or…maybe I want to eat whatever I want and not have my “grinch belly” show up as an unwanted accessory. JUST SAYIN’! I’m over 40, have had 2 kids, and like cheese. So while this dress hides that IÂ might skip my ab workout, it definately flatters by showing off my arms and runners legs.
I also love a flowy dress that has movement when I move. Say good bye to having to adjust the outfit to be comfortable. This dress might as well be my jammies; but dang….I feel too good about myself in this to be laying in bed! Notice the slight angle to the hemline…this dress ain’t for going to bed in friends! There is also a small slit on one side…you’ll see it in the pics below.
Since this is a piece from a previous season I can’t link it; but I did find some REALLY cute ones here for you!
The Black, in Little Black Dress
Black is one of the best colors. It’s incredibly versatile. Always trendy. Looks chic in almost any type of fabric. I mean, I think we all love black, right? So it’s why a Little Black Dress is a staple in any wardrobe. I loved this one because it was satin. There’s a big trend going on right now with this type of fabric (think pajama shirts with jeans). It’s dressy for sure, which makes it perfect for holiday parties!
Finish the Look with Fabulous Accessories
You know me by now….accessories are a MUST. I decided to go monochrome with this outfit and I love how it turned out! Remember these boots from last Christmas?! A gift from my hubby and while I don’t have too many places to wear them (these heels are SO HIGH), most holiday parties will have a mix of sitting and standing so these are perfect. And not to mention festive! Sequins, even if they are black, are the way to go! Imagine how the twinkling lights will dance off my kick ass boots!
The necklace is a really fun piece from Stella & Dot. It is one of their necklaces you can wear multiple ways, so I deconstructed it and left it in it’s simplest form. I really love how it’s an iridescent tone to the black feathers which help it pop off the satin. Then the black and gold chains are matte, which, while making them almost invisible, they also get a second look.
Clutch for parties!!! No need for a huge tote, or even your handbag. All you should really need is your phone, ID, credit card and lipstick. The rest can stay home! This one from Covet by Stella & Dot made of buttery leather is everything and I love, love, love how this super monochrome outfit has SO MUCH texture in it! I had a deep red satin clutch that I considered; but that’s just too much satin. Don’t be afraid to mix and match fabrics and textures to add interest and elevate you look.
My Favorite Pic
This shot, taken by Brooke Holmes (bmariephoto.com) is my favorite. We worked hard during this shoot at The Westin The Woodlands, and this was my last outfit of the session. I’m not a model, I don’t really know how to show off the clothes “just right” and I often think I have a “deer in the headlights” look to my photos; BUT this one is all me. And it shows how this little black dress is perfect for a comfortable and ridiculously stylish night out. Sitting here, totally relaxed, is how I want to spend my evenings celebrating the season with old friends and new. Just us, being us, and loving each other all the more for it.
I hope you have some fun events to go to where you get to slip on your Little Black Dress. But if not, why not MAKE one? Invite a few friends over, tell them you’d like them to dress up; but save the money on going out! Offer to share some amazingly delicious holiday drinks, like the ones I shared LAST Christmas, have a few decadent nibbles and you are set!
Happy Holidays my friends! I’m so incredibly grateful for you, and the time we spend together, whether online somehow or in person. Here’s to you rocking YOUR Little Black Dress!
xoxo Taryn
