With seasons changing in most places on the globe, it’s time to think of transitioning to Fall. Based on what I’ve seen so far in the Fall 2018 offerings, and just my own classic style, I’ve come up with FIVE Fall Must Haves! Maybe you’ve already got these in your closet, or you are ready for a few new pieces to work with what you’ve got!
FALL IS FOR LAYERS
We all know that when the temperature drops, one of the funnest and coziest ways to show our personality is through layers. You can be the laid back, earthy style of Joanna Gaines, or bring more colors and textures to your style game. Heavier fabrics, which are typical for the season and set the style apart from the warmer months, sit much differently on us than those flowy summer pieces, so early Fall is the time to mix the two together.
3/4 LENGTH SLEEVED BLAZER
You can buy some SUPER CUTE ones almost anywhere now that have a 3/4 sleeve and some rouching at the inner elbow to add a little style detail, or, just roll your sleeve up twice. This allows you to show off any arm party of fun bracelets you may be accessorizing with, and create a more casual vibe. I mean, you aren’t going to the boardroom, just meeting your friends!
My favorite colors for this type of casual blazer in Fall is black, camel brown or a light grey plaid /tweed. Definately lined, with a slimmer lapel and not necessarily needing a closure in front. I tend to wear mine open, also more casual. These tones pair amazingly with most colors you may have, especially if you have a flowy sleeveless tank or cute graphic T to put underneath. Looks effortless. But to have a crisp white, untucked and slightly unbuttoned dress shirt with denim is pretty darn fun too.
Since it’s still a million degrees here in Dubai, I went onto my Fall 2018 Pinterest Board to show you a few examples of my fave looks with blazers. And for us women over 35, this is such a polished way to present ourselves, when maybe our full time job is CEO of the household! Looks great in seconds!
Not sure how to find out which style is right for you? There will be a follow up article on how to pick the right length and style for your body style coming soon!!
Check out these places for some really cute ones:
FALL VEST
Ok, so blazer feels too stuffy or just not you? This is where the vest comes in. They are all over the place right now and you can have your pick of all kinds of styles! Cargo style? Knit? Plush? Plaid? Quilted? The list literally goes on, with every length under the sun. This is perfect for heading out anywhere from the pumpkin patch to the Holiday Markets!
What you want to remember with vests, and any jacket really, is to make sure the arm holes are large enough to accomadate anything you layer underneath it. If a casual T or sleeveless top is best, that means you may not wear that layering piece to far into winter, and can bring it back out in late spring. Nothing worse than having your sleeve bunch up inside and look frumpy, not to mention, uncomfortable.
Also if it is too tight under the arms, I find I sweat more. There’s no room for my underarm to breath, and I just do not love the feeling. But that might just be me!
I found a few cute options here:
POINTED TOE SHOES
Ok, before you get mad and say, if I wear heels I will literally FALL into Fall, not to worry! You probably know by now I love a pointed toe to help elongate the line of the leg! This can also be achieved with a pointed toe flat. MY preference is a heel; but there are certain occaisions, where that’s just not practical! I love a good slim fit / skinny jean with a pointed toe shoe. Pair that that with the blazer look above, and you are golden!
The other benefit to a pointed toe shoe is it elevates the look in an instant, is very versatile now that they are so commonly worn as dressy footwear or with denim, but the height you are comfortable with is definatley out there. From flat, to kitten heel, to stiletto….you love it, it’s available.
When any height of heel is new for you, I highly recommend you can A) walk with good posture and not feel like you are going to fall over. If you feel like you are, it looks like you are. B) you are at an event where they may not be as much standing as others, so you have a chance to sit and rest your tootsies while you take your shoes out on the town for the first time.
Plus, shoes is where you can get fun. If there is one place where you can go all Carrie Bradshaw safely, it’s SO your shoes, if you ask me!! Find some fun and funky ones! They will go with anything!
SUEDE ANKLE BOOTIES
Yes, for those who just say “poo poo” to that pointed toe, the suede ankle bootie is a Fall Staple and it is not going anywhere anytime soon. Every year new versions come out which is so fun. Some are perforated / cut out styles, some are zip up, some are slip on; but however they get on your foot, know you are on trend sister, so walk tall.
Consider going for a “less” neutral (aka: safe) color like the beige, and check out the burgandy, navy, deep green or the camel brown. Those are classic Fall Colors and you can add a fun blanket scarf with just a hint of whatever color your shoes are to tie it all together if you like!
Suede is one of my favorite textures of Fall, so this is such a great addition to any denim, dress, skirt, jumpsuit, or khaki pant. Literally, where those booties with everything! Just remember, if you are in an area where Fall has wet weather, these definatlely need to be treated to last you season after fashionable season.
FUN SNEAKER
And for you, woman of style who just CANNOT with any heels, cute flats are not your only option. The world of fashion sneakers has exploded and I love them! Casual yet, typically a leather material, you know these aren’t really meant for the gym; but should you need to chase your kid down the target aisle, you can do it with speed and style.
My favorites are my Nike Cortez runners; but everyone from designer brands to your go to exercise brand has a line that is embellished with anything from satin, sequins, metallics to quilting. You can go for the slip on style or the lace up. The options are endless; but I strongly suggest whatever you get yourself, isn’t what you wear to workout. Knowing these are fashion sneakers, they may not be made with the same support structure of an actual athletic shoe, so these just won’t hold up on the treadmill.
So yes, tell your husband you need a workout runner and a “fun” sneaker. End of discussion! Haha!
GETTING STARTED ON YOUR FALL FASHION
These five pieces can all be easily added to your spring / summer wardrobe as the days are not consistently hot or cold. You’ll look stylish AND savvy since you are just bringing in a couple of key pieces, not running out to get a new wardrobe. Once you have these and can leave the house feeling really great about your look, you can observe a little more what some of the other Fall looks are, and decide whether they are for you, or you’ll be passing, all while looking like you aren’t in a rush to stock up!
Remember, trends come and go; but once you find YOUR Method to Style and understand what YOU like on your body, you’ll be creating a closet full of things you love, and look your best every time you walk out your door. Nothing is classier than that!
