Versatility is KEY

Seasonless Plaid Dress

Winter is definitely plaid season, right? I can’t walk too far down the street, late in the year, and not see men, women or children sporting all kinds of plaid, patterns and colors! I bought this dress last Fall at Zara; but I’m determined to share more ways to wear it, so it can be versatile for 2-3 seasons. The key to that, is making it look different with OTHER pieces added to it.

While I loved the dress in the store, I knew ALL THAT PLAID, was a bit too much for me. Not to mention, it’s really memorable. And for a piece to be versatile, it’s all about finding ways to wear it often, without looking like you are.

PLAY UP ONE OF THE COLORS

In this look, I focused on black. This knit sweater is a great way to add details and more texture to this dress. The knit has a pattern in this, which is pretty clear when you see it over the dress. Adds interest. The collar, cuffs and bottom hem of the sweater are scalloped, and it stands out against the pattern, giving it a different waistline, and….interest! The bell sleeves give a little drama; but I love that the cuff at the wrist is tight almost looks more tailored / finished.

Ankle boots with skirts was very on trend this past winter, so these faux suede boots I have bought for under $25 at Forever21 a couple years ago were perfect, and the pointed toe helped to elongate the look! Add minimal accessories, and its a pretty and polished look!

WHITE LOOKS RIGHT

Months later, during Ramadan, I wanted to wear this dress again (did I mention that this type of skirt is my absolute favorite? Makes me feel like I’m floating while walking, so it gives me confidence!); but focusing on black, felt a little too heavy for Spring. White was an easy option, since I had that button up in my closet, and it goes with everything. This dress has a waistline hem incorporated into the design, which is a little too high for my preference, so adding tops like this allows me to create my OWN waistline, and get this dress more ME. And you can do the same for YOU!

Change out the accessories, put on different shoe, carry a different bag, and you’ve got a totally different look.

HOW ELSE CAN WE MAKE IT CUSTOM?

If you love the plaid, wear it alone, and add a belt! Black, metallic, sparkly or neutral. Pair with a pointed toe flat or gladiator sandal, and a straw fedora.

Layer with a cute graphic T and give it a side tie / knot, and pair with fashion sneakers.

I’m thinking a long length, black turtleneck and then add a skinny leather belt with a gold buckle, and leather booties.

Maybe go western with it and add cream colored eyelet lace top, denim jacket and cowboy boots!

When you see a dress, love the fit; but aren’t crazy about the pattern, consider there are WAY more ways to wear it than just “as is” off the rack. Add YOUR Method of Style to it and make it custom for YOU.

Happy Hunting! xo Taryn
