Well, I remember the day when I said, “I’ll never wear high waisted pantsâ€, and yet here we are. I own about 5 pairs (like this cargo version below), between trousers and denim! What I’m learning as I navigate through life via fashion and style, never say never. Turns out, it’s a super long time, and we can have a total style evolution, where we embrace the exact things we once rejected!
NEVER SAY NEVER, IT’S A REALLY LONG TIME
That can actually apply to anything in our lives, right? I bet you’ve changed your mind or point of view on things as you’ve grown and experienced more life. I know for sure I have; but it also applies to my Method of Style! I think its why many of us can get stuck in a “Style Rutâ€. Our Style is evolving; but we don’t know how to fully embrace that “new†thing because it reminds us too much of that “old†thing, we said we’d never do!
THAT SAID, YOU WON’T LOVE EVERYTHING
Perfect example is when I saw so many of the styles I wore in Grade 9 come back into style just this past year. (My 12 year old daughter, who is in LOVE with these looks that I used to have, she was so sad I didn’t keep it for her. Sorry little one, you weren’t even a thought in my mind 30 years ago!) Those pieces, coming back around, I just couldn’t embrace; but what is super weird is I’m super drawn to sequins, bright colors and really unexpected color combinations!
My wardrobe, for many years, has been primarily neutral, navy and black. Once in a while I’ll have a pop of color top or a pattern mixed in there; but it’s pretty predictable what I’ll have hanging in the closet. And even when I decided to cull my wardrobe, the color always got taken out.
Now, I’m dying to have a neon yellow button up to pair with a burgundy blazer, or a bright tangerine orange blouse to pair with denim or a day trouser. Not only that; but I want funky shoes. Well, I always want funky shoes; but I want REALLY funky shoes. Bursting with color, texture and originality. Maybe even a platform heel…who am I?! Me…2021, almost 45, and feeling a need for color and joy to be in my outfits, after living through 2020.
We’ve been in a cocoon for a very long time….time to burst out as a butterfly. Even if it is just to go to the grocery store.
TOTAL STYLE EVOLUTION
So this is were Never Say Never comes in. Maybe you feel your wardrobe is boring, predictable, or has just been the ssaammmeeeee for a really long time. Just because it’s still in good condition doesn’t mean you have to keep wearing it. Alternatively, if it’s been around for a long time there is an excellent chance it’s seen better days.
When we wear tired, dated, well worn pieces over and over, it can make US look tired, dated and worn out. Not so fast! That’s not you and it’s sure isn’t me! Well, listen, we all have our days sister, where sweats, bad hair and no makeup are a reality; but when we decide to make an effort, we should feel FRESH! FAB! READY FOR ANYTHING! I’m telling you, when we look good, we feel good. It’s not a bad thing! We are all busy working, Mommin’, cooking, cleaning, wife-ing and all the other things; but once in a while, we get to go FIRST.
So it’s time for your style evolution. Your Method to Style needs to be dusted off and really spend time finding what you are drawn to! You know I love a good Pinterest Board for inspiration, so I encourage you to go on there and make one! A fresh space, where you are only going to pin the things that really jump out at you. Not the safe things, not the familiar things. The FUN things.
NEVER SAY NEVER
Never say never to color, pattern, outfit combos, textures or anything else that could light you up when you get ready for the day. Clothes are there to compliment our best features, and as we age our hair, skin and eye color can change slightly, or dramatically! That CHANGES what is complimentary to us, and I think that is what makes the rediscovery of your Method to Style so cool.
We mature. Maybe decide we like to just show the IDEA of our silhouette, not the actual outline of our body. We want to show more polish than causal style. Even if it is just once in a while. We want to have a look that stands out and is uniquely ours, not blending in to what everyone else is wearing. There’s only one you baby….don’t you ever dim your light to make others comfortable.
Heels in the daytime? DO IT! Fashion sneakers with every single thing you own, from dresses, to denim to trouser suits? WEAR THEM! Adding denim under dresses to make them more versatile and less fancy? YES PLEASE!
DO YOU, AND HAVE FUN WITH IT
My fabulous ladies, find your Method to Style and don’t be afraid to change it. You don’t decide on it once, and then stick with that forever! That’s why fashion is so freaking fabulous. You can embrace trends and be in the moment, or find classics you love. Or maybe you fall in love with a trend and it BECOMES a classic for you!
Always take what you already own and try to wear it in different ways. Be creative and unexpected with your wardrobe; but always be curious of how you could find a style that is just really, really, super, duper YOU.
You don’t have to dress to wow anyone every single day. What I’m saying, is have a wardrobe that can do it all. Try layering, mixing and matching, pairing high end pieces with super casual, and vice versa. Dress for your mood, or to BOOST your mood! Stand tall and walk proud and confident. But no matter HOW you dress…..
DON’T LOOK DOWN
Walk with your head held high, shoulders back, excellent posture, and a smile on your face. Did you know that not only are smiles contagious; “but studies show that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin. These three powerhouses together make us feel good from head to toe! Not only by elevating your mood; but they also reduce physical pain†(excerpt taken from www.very well mind.com)
Turns out, loving your Method to Style can make you happy with what you see and how you present yourself to the world. When you are happy, you smile more, and when you smile more, you are not only taking care of yourself from the inside, you are causing others to smile, and then they do the same.
Here’s to you and our Style Evolutions ladies!!
